Fall 2010 Catalogue
Herbaceous Peonies F - L

Prices are for 3-5 eye field grown divisions shipped bare root in the fall

Flame
Flame $30
Originator/Parentage: Glasscock 1939 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / No
As the name suggest, this peony has very brightly coloured flowers. Some peony references call it red but it would be wiser to consider it deep pink. Pretty well all peonies have excellent foliage but I find this plant is particularly good. The foliage is glossy green and abundant.

France
France $35
Originator/Parentage: Kelway 1917 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
This is another seldom seen old cultivar from Kelways nursery in the UK. My stock plants were imported several years ago and have grown very well here.

The flowers are somewhere between a bombe double and anemone in form (see Descriptions for further details) with often both forms present on the same plant. The look is definitely that of a classic European peony making this an excellent addition to a traditional perennial border.

The pink guard petals retain their colour well as the centre fades to rich cream.

Fringed Ivory
Fringed Ivory $25
Originator/Parentage: Klehm R.G. 1989 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
Perfectly symmetrical flat flowers sit atop very dark green foliage. Registered as a double it could be called a very full semi-double because of the very visible golden centre.

Garden Treasure
Garden Treasure $150
Originator/Parentage: Hollingsworth 1984 / Itoh Hybrid
Height/Staking: <60 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Winner of the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1996 and the Award of Landscape Merit in 2009 (see Descriptions for award details). If I could grow but one yellow peony, this show stopper would be my choice. It is a vigorous grower that reliably produces truly yellow flowers over an extended bloom period.

George Vorauer
George Vorauer $45
Originator/Parentage: Ménard/D'Aoust 2007 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: >90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / No
This is the first to bloom of the very dark single lactiflora group peonies I grow. The colour holds well. The flowers are well formed with smooth petal margins.

George Vorauer the person was a passionate peony collector and a gardener who was instrumental in leading the effort to restore and expand the historic plant collections at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. His many friends made arrangements to have this peony named in his honour.

George visited my fields many times and he was always on the lookout for colours that worked well together. He would combine colours I would never have thought of. He was always right. Bold colours and bold combinations were his hallmark with peonies and I believe he would have liked this peony.

Gilbert Bartholet
Gilbert Barthelot $30
Originator/Parentage: Doriat 1931 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
A very floriferous old variety from Edouard Doriat, the French horticulturist who had an enormous peony collection at Lapalisse including the collection purchased from Félix Crousse upon his retirement in 1905.

Globe of Light
Globe of Light $35
Originator/Parentage: Kelway 1928 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Faint
James Kelway and his son William were the “ ...first English raisers of new varieties. They were pioneers in popularizing the paeony in Great Britain...”. The nursery still exists today, although no longer run by the Kelway family. When buying old cultivars such as this one, the purchaser is obtaining not only a lovely plant but also a story and a small piece of horticultural history.

The petals tend to flex inward around the pale golden centre. The colour is mid pink and as I’ve said in other descriptions, flowers of this form work very well when planted next to heavy doubles of lighter or darker colouring.

Gloire de Charles Gombault
Gloire de Charles Gombault $35
Originator/Parentage: Gombault 1866 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
A very old French variety with lovely high flowers. In the initial years the flowers are smaller but as the plant reaches maturity the flowers can be enormous. The plants can be slightly taller than average.

Golden Bracelet
Golden Bracelet $30
Originator/Parentage: Brand, A.M. 1939 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Creamy white guard petals surround a ring of small golden petals (the bracelet...) which in turn surround a fluffy white centre. The flower form can be quite variable from one flower to another with some being more double than others. To my eye this adds to the interest of the plant.

Golly
Golly $35
Originator/Parentage: Krekler 1965 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Gorgeous big flowers open at the end of the peony season. Something of a novelty flower form because it looks like a flower within a flower. Though the form is a bit of a novelty, the flowers are certainly not brash and they integrate well with other forms and colours. One of my favourites.

Gratis
Gratis $30
Originator/Parentage: Krekler 1968 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: None / No
Named for Gratis, Ohio which is a small town not far from where Mr. Krekler had is nursery. This is one of the darkest flowers I have in my collection.

It flowers at a time when double peonies dominate the garden. A dark single at this time is an absolute gift to the gardener looking to obtain some visual balance in a planting.

Henry Bockstoce
Henry Bockstoce $25
Originator/Parentage: Bockstoce, W.S. 1955 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: >90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: None / No
Big bold flowers and foliage best describe this peony. It is a good choice for those wanting an impressive display and who have the space to accommodate this large peony. The dark red colour is excellent and is maintained for the life of the flower.

Honor
Honor $40
Originator/Parentage: Saunders 1941 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
I rarely see this peony listed in catalogues which is a huge shame. It is certainly on my short list of the best hybrids introduced by Professor Saunders.

The flowers are large and perfectly formed. The colour holds well. There is often a direct correlation between the number of photos I have of a particular variety and its beauty. I have dozens of pictures of this peony! It is very photogenic. The colour is lavender pink.

Illini Belle
Illini Belle $30
Originator/Parentage: Glasscock 1941 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / No
For a dramatic statement in your perennial border, plant this peony next to pale yellow flowers! The flowers are the colour of mahogany and have a lovely compact shape. Even in heavy rain, this peony remains standing.

Henry Sass
Illini Warrior $30
Originator/Parentage: Glasscock/Falk 1955 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: >90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: Occasional / Faint

An excellent garden peony! Generous in the number of flowers yet stands up tall in all weather. The flowers are the colour of a good burgundy wine and hold their colour until they drop. Add to this a pleasant light fragrance and you have a great addition to the perennial border.

Jeanne d'Arc
Jeanne d'Arc $35
Originator/Parentage: Calot 1858 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
A peony that has been in cultivation for over 150 years! Jeanne d’Arc (translation: Joan of Arc) was introduced by one of France’s earliest peony hybridizers at about the middle of his career. Every peony I have seen from this nurseryman, I love.

Jeannot
Jeannot $30
Originator/Parentage: Dessert 1918 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
This is a classic old French peony. The exquisite flowers come along with excellent fragrance. Colour is slightly bluish pink or lavender. Auguste Dessert introduced many peonies during his life time including Tourangelle and Auguste Dessert which are also listed in this year’s catalogue. He took over the peony collection of his grandfather, Étienne Méchin, who had earlier taken over the collection of one of France’s earliest peony breeders, Modeste Guèrin.

Josette
Josette $25
Originator/Parentage: Brethour 1937 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm /No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
A Canadian peony! Dr. Brethour was a dentist from Toronto who grew and bred peonies as a hobby. It is a huge shame that most of his introductions have disappeared from commerce. The two that I grow, Faith Fenton and Josette are outstanding peonies.

Julia Grant
Julia Grant $30
Originator/Parentage: Saunders 1939 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm /No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / No
Very bright pink flowers that fade beautifully through several shades of pink.

For those interested in name derivations, you could spend quite some time on the family tree of Julia Grant and why Prof. Saunders would name a peony Julia Grant. I believe the peony was named for Julia Grant the great granddaughter of Julia Grant, the First Lady and wife of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. Julia Grant the younger lived down the street from Prof. Saunders in Clinton New York.(If you are curious you can find the link between Julia Grant and Grace Root).

Julia Rose
Julia Rose $150
Originator/Parentage: Anderson R.F. / Itoh hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Faint
As with many of the other intersectional hybrids, the fade pattern is an important characteristic of this peony. I find the colours sometimes difficult to describe in words but perhaps a description of pinkish copper through to creamy yellow paints the right picture in my mind.

Karl Rosenfield
Karl Rosenfield $25
Originator/Parentage: Rosenfield 1908 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Faint
From the 1916 catalogue of American nurseryman Bertrand H. Farr: “This variety exhibited by me at the exhibition of the American Peony Society, in June, 1911, received First Prize for the best new Peony not in commerce before 1908”. Well 101 years later and it is no longer a new peony. It has stood the test of time and is widely grown today precisely because it can be relied upon to produce a good show of lustrous beetroot red flowers year after year.

Katryn Fonteyn
Katryn Fonteyn $30
Originator/Parentage: ? / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
The American Peony Society has no records for this peony. I have however seen it attributed to Van de Valk / Van de Zwet of the Netherlands under the name Catharina Fontijn. My stock plants came from France under the name of Katryn Fonteyn. Regardless of the spelling and who introduced it, it is a lovely flower. The flowers are perfectly symmetrical and quite highly build. They never look disheveled or untidy. On opening the flowers are pink and with time fade beautifully to almost white as the flowers age.

Krinkled White
Krinkled White $25
Originator/Parentage: Brand, A.M. 1928 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
A profusion of pure white single flowers appear near the end of the season. This is one of my favourite peonies! The foliage is light green with tall strong stems making this peony a good choice for cut flowers. Awarded the Award of Landscape Merit in 2009 by the American Peony Society (see Descriptions for award details)

La Belle Helene
La Belle Helene $35
Originator/Parentage: Kelway 1915 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
Another seldom seen old cultivar from Kelways in the UK. My stock plants were imported directly from Kelways in the early years of my nursery and have grown well here.

La Belle Helene produces flowers of a generous size and quantity. The shape is informal as I’ve come to expect from a cultivar of this provenance.

The flowers are blush pink upon opening and if the weather is cool and overcast they retain this colour for some time. The magenta streaking can be quite prominent and this is a characteristic I like to accentuate by associating it with deep magenta peonies of the same bloom time.

LaDonna
LaDonna $30
Originator/Parentage: Hollingsworth 1997 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Though technically a hybrid peony, the plant habit and appearance resembles that of P. lactiflora. A flower of fascinating form; a flower within a flower. I find these flowers to be the epitome of floral grace and enjoy them as much in the garden as in the house as cut flowers.

Lancaster Imp
Lancaster Imp $30
Originator/Parentage: Klehm, R.G. 1987 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Faint
Compact, symmetrical flowers nicely positioned on a compact plant. No hint of yellow pollen making this a good choice for the designer looking for pure, creamy white flowers for the front of the border.

Le Cygne
Le Cygne $25
Originator/Parentage: Lemoine 1907 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
I have spent more time trying to sort out the identity of this peony than any other peony I grow. When collecting old peonies there is always a real chance of not having the original cultivar. Some of the old peonies are very similar and the original descriptions are often sketchy at best. This being said, when I have a suspect cultivar I attempt to obtain reference plants from several sources for comparison. I have at least 4 cultivars purporting to be Le Cygne. I have them from Canada, England, Germany and the USA. Each is subtly different. Normally I would abandon and send them all to the compost bin but in this case I believe I have the right one.

Lois Arleen
Lois Arleen $30
Originator/Parentage: Moots 1962 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: <60 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
Although described as deep pink by the American Peony Society literature, I suggest the overall colour is red and a good clear red at that. It is a lower grower than most peonies. The average height here is probably about 65 cm. The petals keep their colour well and it has proven to be very floriferous here.

Frank Moots registered only 3 peonies and they are not widely grown. This one at least deserves to be better known. It has been an excellent performer in my field.

Lord Kitchener
Lord Kitchener $30
Originator/Parentage: Kelway 1900 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
Another peony I imported directly from the UK several years ago. I am a huge fan of single peonies this colour. The very deep colour is extremely attractive but it can be problematic in double flowers. When it is sunny double flowers absorb the sun’s heat and cook from the inside out. The dark singles usually escape this fate and I’ve found them to be the most reliable way to add dark colours in the later part of the bloom season.

Named for the British Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener who would have been at the height of his military career when this peony was named for him by James Kelway.

Lotus Bloom
Lotus Bloom $40
Originator/Parentage: Saunders 1943 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: Occasional / Faint
Petals have a deep pink base and prominent white flares on outside. Most flowers also have a spurious petal in the centre that adds a bit of comedy to the scene. I grow over 700 different cultivars and without hesitation I say that Lotus Bloom is in my top ten list of favourites. Petal substance is excellent. The stems take on a life of their own and tend to twist and turn. In no way does this diminish their value. A single stem in a tall clear vase is a thing of rare beauty.

Lovely Rose
Lovely Rose $35
Originator/Parentage: Saunders 1942 / Hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / No
The flowers are large for the size of the plant. The coloration is interesting with the centre being quite a bit darker than the margins. The flowers maintain their initial cupped shape making for a well behaved and tidy appearance.

Lucky
Lucky $30
Originator/Parentage: Krekler 1977 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / No
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / No
This is one of my favourites among Japanese form peonies of this colour. The petals are nicely rounded while the centre is a tidy mass of gold and burgundy. The colour does not fade even in strong sunlight.
