Fall 2008 Catalogue
Peonies L to M

LaDonna
LaDonna $30
Originator/Parentage: Hollingsworth 1997 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Though technically a hybrid peony, the plant habit and appearance resembles that of P. lactiflora . A flower of fascinating form; a flower within a flower. I find these flowers to be the epitome of floral grace and enjoy them as much in the garden as in the house as cut flowers.

Le Charme
Le Charme $30
Originator/Parentage: Eliason 1964 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
A peony not to be missed! Similar in some ways to 'Sword Dance' but the colour is more in the range of the purples than that of 'Sword Dance'. Like many of the Japanese form peonies it blooms later in the peony season and as such appears when many of the large doubles are in flower. Together they make a nice garden image with their varying form and weight.

Legion of Honor
Legion of Honor $30
Originator/Parentage: Saunders 1941 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Though of average height this peony does not have particularly dense foliage. The scarlet flowers are held on wiry stems above light green foliage.

The flower colour is a lovely clear red.

For those interested in peony breeding, this hybrid often produces a few seeds.

Light's Out
Lights Out $30 (Sorcerer)
Originator/Parentage: Klehm 1995 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Faint

An intensely dark single with compact single flowers. The pollen is abundant and is sprinkled liberally over the dark petals giving an appearance of flowers sprinkled with gold dust. The stems and petioles are more purple than green adding to the overall dark effect of the plant.

The June 2007 issue of the American Peony Society Bulletin annouced that this peony has been renamed 'Sorcerer'. Apparently the name 'Lights Out' had already been attributed to another peony and so a name change was required.

Lillian Gumm
Lillian Gumm $25
Originator/Parentage: Gumm 1921 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
This peony produces huge fluffy double flowers with a distinct lemon fragrance that makes for a wonderful cut flower. When staked however the plant is also a great garden specimen. The flowers are almost globe shaped with no visible collar.

Consider underplanting them with blue flowered plants such as Nepeta mussini or lavender for an incredibly pretty picture.

Little Red Gem
Little Red Gem $45
Originator/Parentage: Reath 1988 /hybrid
Height/Staking: <60 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 1
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
Usually the first peony to flower in our collection. Plant forms a symmetrical mound. Foliage is well dissected. Flowers open red but quickly become deep pink.

Louise Lossing
Louise Lossing $25
Originator/Parentage: Lossing 1938 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked

A Canadian peony having large bright white flowers with an occasional carmine streak. The peony was bred by Ontario gardener Evelyn Lossing and named for her daughter, Louise.

Originator/Parentage: Dessert 1899 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Along with ‘Gratis’ and ‘Night Watch’ this is probably the darkest flower I grow. Though classified as a double it tends to be quite open; the petals mingled with golden stamens. The flowers become fuller as the plant matures.

Maestro
Maestro $25
Originator/Parentage: Auten 1957 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
Somewhere between a loose double and a semi-double. Dark red flowers with prominent golden stamens intermingled in the petals.

Magic Moonbeam
Magic Moonbeam $25
Originator/Parentage: Krekler 1984 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Almost a flower within a flower as there is a distinct ring of stamens surrounding another complete flower. The flowers are pure white and quite symmetric in form.

Mahogany
Mahogany $30
Originator/Parentage: Glasscock 1937 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
Dark red single flowers have always attracted my attention. Mahogany is well named. The colour is deep and does not fade. The petals are curved inward with cleanly rounded margins giving the flower a tidy cupped appearance.

Many Happy Returns
Many Happy Returns $30
Originator/Parentage: Hollingsworth 1986 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Slightly ruffled leaf margins give the plant an interest even when not in bloom. Nicely curved petals are rosy red and fade nicely with time while retaining their shape. Quite floriferous. Flower form considered between a bomb double and anemone form.

Marshmallow Button
Marshmallow Button $25
Originator/Parentage: Klehm 1986 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Lovely white flowers with a very distinct centre of thin yellow petals. Many of the flowers give the flower in a flower presentation shown in the picture.

Mary Pratte
Mary Pratte $45 - SOLD
Originator/Parentage: Ménard/D'Aoust 2006 /hybrid
Height/Staking: >90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: Occasional / None
Another peony offered for the first time and in limited number this year. The pretty, cup shaped flowers are held close to the foliage. Despite only occasional side buds the plant is very floriferous with the flowers being very resistant to fading and damage caused by inclement weather.

Chosen to be named after the third president of the Canadian Peony Society, by her family, to celebrate her passion for peonies and to mark a significant birthday. A donation was made to the SPCA Montérègie, Québec, for the privilege of naming this peony.

May Music
May Music $35
Originator/Parentage: Saunders/Reath 1973 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 3
Side buds/Fragrance: Occasional / Faint
The flowers open an interesting shade of apricot with pink flares. As the days pass the flowers turn to an almost clear pale lemon yellow. The numerous flowers appear on a bushy plant. No amount of rain has been able to fell this peony so far in my field. It looks stunning when planted next to 'Illini Belle' which flowers at about the same time.

Merry Mayshine
Merry Mayshine $30
Originator/Parentage: Saunders/Smetana
1994 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 3
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Well dissected foliage. Good red colour. Quite large flowers for a P. tenuifolia hybrid.

The stems are ramrod straight and strong, the flowers are rich dark red and the foliage dark green and lacy. This however is no small plant as is often the case with peonies that count P. tenuifolia in their ancestry. It is a dramatic, statuesque peony I never hesitate to recommend.

Milton Jack
Milton Jack $25
Originator/Parentage: Jack 1980 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: 6e semaine
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / None
A Canadian peony. Named for the founder of the Canadian nursery Ferncliff Gardens. The flowers are a good strong colour which works very well with some of the lighter pink doubles such as 'Alberta Kelsey' or even the Japanese form 'Le Charme'.

Miss America
Miss America $30
Originator/Parentage: Man/Van Steen 1936
/ P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
A very pretty peony with large white semi-double flowers. This peony won the American Peony Society’s Gold Medal twice. The plant has lots of side buds that help extend the bloom period.

Missie's Blush
Missie's Blush $30
Originator/Parentage: Bainum/Hollingsworth 1994
/ P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
Lovely white flowers that open with a blush pink caste which is particularly evident if the weather is cool and overcast. The numerous side buds keep the plant in bloom over an extended period of time. The flowers are completely transformed with no evidence of pollen or carpels on the main flowers.

Mother's Choice
Mother's Choice $25
Originator/Parentage: Glasscock 1950 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5

Perfectly formed flowers composed of creamy white petals that very occasionally show a hint of magenta on the margins. It is a floriferous stout plant with a long standing reputation for reliable blooming.

Mrs Edward Harding
Mrs Edward Harding $25
Originator/Parentage: Shaylor 1918 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Yellow stamens clearly visible through densely packed centre petals. Good dark green foliage makes this peony particularly attractive even when not in bloom.

Mrs Edward Harding, the person, is no other than the great peony enthusiast Alice Harding. She was the author of two well known peony books ‘The Book of the Peony’ and ‘Peonies in the Little Garden’. Both of which are well worth seeking out today. She lived and gardened at Burnley Farm, Plainfield, NJ. Two other peonies were named in her honour, this time however in the name of Alice Harding (a tree peony and a herbaceous peony). There are also two French hybrid lilacs bearing her name. (Edward Harding, her husband was a lawyer in NY)

Mrs Euclid Snow
Mrs Euclid Snow $25
Originator/Parentage: Brand 1939 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
This peony was added to my collection solely because I was looking for fragrance. It did not disappoint! I would have however been very happy with this peony even if it was not so fragrant.

Mrs Franklin D. Roosevelt
Mrs Franklin D. Roosevelt $35
Originator/Parentage: Franklin 1932 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5

Winner of the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1948. Delightful distinct fragrance. Exceptionally pretty flowers.

Mrs Livingston Farrand $25
Originator/Parentage: Nicholls 1935 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: >90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
It’s difficult to put a description on the colour but it is a pink without any blue and perhaps just a hint of orange. The flowers are very symmetrical and quite flat, almost rose form.

A small piece of trivia... Mrs Livingston Farrand was the sister-in-law of Beatrix Jones Farrand, the prominent American landscape architect.

Multiflora
Multiflora $30

Opens pale pink but quickly turns to white. Very floriferous. On the shorter side of average peony height.

Myrtle Gentry $30
Originator/Parentage: Brand 1925 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
Another great late peony. As is often the case with late flowering peonies, the flowers are large and full.
