|
| A very old cultivar from the nursery of Auguste Calot who created some of the most beautiful and fragrant peonies including the still ubiquitous Duchesse de Nemours and my personal favourite Philomèle, both of which are peonies with exquisite fragrances. Marie Lemoine is equally fragrant.
Though the flowers are white, the centre is clearly suffused with pale yellow giving the flowers a greater depth and interest.

If peony pink was a valid colour name this peony would be a perfect match. The colour is rich and the flowers generous. Yes, you will likely need to stake it but it will repay you well with a mass of fragrant flowers.

| Height/Staking: |
60-90 cm / Best when staked |
| Bloom Period: |
Week 6 |
| Side buds/Fragrance: |

|
| As I’ve said in several other descriptions of Kelsey peonies, I have yet to find one of his introductions that I did not immediately find beautiful (possible exception being Lois Kelsey..)
Mr. Ernest Flint Kelsey himself described it as “large blush-white double of bewitching loveliness”.
Like Ramona Lins it is a big blush peony. The form however is more rounded and not as highly built. The flowers are very symmetrical. The blush pink colour is stronger in the centre and like other flowers of this colour, the colour lasts longer when the weather is cool and overcast. Under hot sunny conditions the blush colour fades quickly to white. Several side buds with attractive red bud covers.
Kelsey grew peonies at one time in Marilla, NY

| I can never get enough of glorious white double peonies like this one. They make wonderful cut flowers if you can bear to part with them in the garden. Perfectly formed symmetrical flowers give just a hint of the golden stems hidden between the petals.

| Height/Staking: |

| Huge, flat flowers with a slightly depressed centre of densely packed petals. The flowers open with a slight pink caste that fades quickly resulting in milky white flowers.
Mr. Johnson did not seem to have introduced many peonies from what I read, and I don’t believe any of his others are still in commerce. A shame because if they were anywhere as impressive as this one, I’d certainly add them to my collection.
These are probably the biggest peony flowers I grow.

| Certainly high on my list of the best peonies! The petals are pure bright white which only helps to set off the tightly packed, red tipped carpels. (It's interesting to note that it is listed in the 1928 Manual of the American Peony Society as pale pink)The plant is covered in flowers but needs no staking here.Awarded the Award of Landscape Merit in 2009 by the American Peony Society (see Descriptions for award details)

| A very pretty apple blossom pink single peony. The flowers are smaller than those of Dainty and are held more erect. Staking is not required. Each petal has a distinct white flare at the base and the flowers age very gracefully. Achieve a nice effect by planting next to blue bearded iris and with dark peonies such as Milton Jack or M. Adam Modzelewski.

This family has grown peonies for over 100 years with Benoît Rivière being the first to take up peony culture seriously. This lovely peony I believe was named for Marie Rivière, his wife.

| Another peony that has been in cultivation for over 150 years! This is a lovely peony with delicate colouring and an exquisite fragrance. Not many of this French nurseryman’s peonies survive today but it’s interesting to note that probably one of the most common peonies today, Festiva Maxima, was also introduced by Auguste Miellez.

| Wonderful rose fragrance! Introduced over 115 years ago it has most decidedly stood the test of time. The flowers are quite small and produced in profusion. The high centre of crimson flecked petals sits atop a wide collar of guard petals. This variety is one of the first double whites to flower here.

|
| History, fragrance and colouration are the major attractions of this peony. The flowers are blush pink with the centre being a shade or two darker than the margins.
Émile Gallé was a French artist best known for his Art Nouveau works in glass. He also had an interest in the natural sciences and drawing plants. He was born and worked in Nancy, France, as did Félix Crousse. Because of the mutual interest in plants, I assume that they must have met at some point and M. Félix Crousse named this peony for Henriette Grimm. Émile Gallé’s wife.
