Fall 2008 Catalogue
Peonies N to Z

Nellie Saylor
Nellie Saylor $35
Originator/Parentage: Krekler 1967 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
This peony gets noticed! The flowers have a deep wine coloured collar. The contrasting centre appears buff making for a striking flower. The flowers are held well above the foliage.

Nick Shaylor
Nick Shaylor $25
Originator/Parentage: Allison 1931 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Exceptional as a cut flower. Two time winner of the American Peony Society Gold Medal. Large flowers open blush pink and quickly turn white. Pretty red streaking appears on some flowers.

Noémie Demay
Noémie Demay $35
Originator/Parentage: Calot 1867 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Excellent
One of my very favourite old French peonies. The Montreal Botanical Gardens has several plants in a grouping at the edge of a dry streambed in their Flowery Brook garden. I photograph this scene every single year and can never get enough of looking at this lovely plant.

P. mollis
P. mollis $30
Originator/Parentage: Species
Height/Staking: <60 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 2
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Whether this is a distinct species or rather a variety or cultivar of P. officinalis is debatable. Taxonomy not being my thing, I leave the debate to others. This is however a very pretty and useful plant for just about any gardener with an interest in peonies.

It flowers a full two weeks before the main blooming season, the colour is exquisite, the foliage glaucous blue. It will develop into a low wide clump over time and is not difficult to establish. If you resist cutting the spent flowers you will be rewarded with decorative seed heads full of shiny black seeds at the end of summer. (The seeds are easy to grow; Link to Instructions)

from P. veitchii
P. veitchii (from) $30
Originator/Parentage: Species
Height/Staking: <60 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 2
Side buds/Fragrance: Variable / None
Because the original seed was not collected in the wild but rather the seed was taken from P. veitchii grown in cultivation, each plant is an individual.

They all however possess characteristics typical of P. veitchii e.g. foliage, nodding flowers, very early bloom time. Flower colour ranges from magenta to mid-pink. Some will have side buds but some will not.

They will do well in full sun in areas with cooler summers but actually do very well when given some light shade.

Standard size root divisions of 3-5 eyes from mature plants are being offered rather than the younger seedlings often listed in catalogues.

Pageant
Pageant $30
Originator/Parentage: Saunders 1943 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
For the longest time I was growing this peony under the name of 'Rose Diamond'; an error on my part. The plants are strong and produce an excellent show of mid pink flowers that can be admired as much from a distance as from close up.

Paul M. Wild
Paul M. Wild $30
Originator/Parentage: Wild 1964 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
A floriferous peony that I have seen described as ruby red and can’t really think of a better description myself. The flowers hold their colour well with age with just the margins of the petals fading and only slightly. The side buds tend to open quickly after the main flower much like ‘The Nathans’ making each stem almost into a small bouquet.

Paula Fay
Paula Fay $30
Originator/Parentage: Fay 1968 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
A striking peony with vivid pink semi-double flowers. The petals are initially waxy in appearance and have a large white blotch at the base. The plant produces numerous flowers and is a vigorous grower.

Peter Barr
Peter Barr $30
Originator/Parentage: Unknown /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 2
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Most likely named for Peter Barr the British nurseryman but by whom and when is the mystery. I have grown ‘Peter Barr’ side by side with the French P. tenuifolia hybrid ‘Smouthi’ for several years and in all honesty can not tell the difference. They are very valuable peonies in that they will bloom about three weeks before the main bloom season (Week 5). They stand bolt upright and produce very cheerful flowers that are impervious to inclement weather.

Pico
Pico $25
Originator/Parentage: Freeborn 1934 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: >90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several /Faint
Reputed to be named by the originator for a Vermont mountain visible from her garden.

Pillow Talk
Pillow Talk $25
Originator/Parentage: Klehm 1973 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Winner of the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 1994. Gorgeous big flowers that are hard to resist when it comes to cutting for the house. One of the quintessential romantic flowers.

Pink Angel
Pink Angel $30
Originator/Parentage: Christensen 1948 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 3
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / None
Very pretty pink flowers with deeper pink nuances throughout the petals. Flowers open close to the foliage.

Pink Moon
Pink Moon $45
Originator/Parentage: Bockstoce/Landis 1974 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Faint
A loose double or perhaps semi-double with numerous golden stamens clearly visible. Flowers can be quite large. Rarely seen in catalogues. I have only a few this year. Like some of the other Bockstoce peonies listed this year, the origins of this cultivar are a bit murky but it is presumed to have been bred by William Bockstoce and introduced by Landis.

Pink Patterns
Pink Patterns $45
Originator/Parentage: Bockstoce/Landis 1974 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Very distinct white markings on mid pink flowers. I do not believe I have ever seen this peony listed in a recent catalogue. My stock plants were purchased from a collector several years ago and I have only a few available this year. The origins of this cultivar are a bit murky but it is presumed to have been introduced bred by Bockstoce and introduced by Landis. They can be a little tricky to establish but in a location they like, they grow and flower well.

Plainsman
Plainsman $25
Originator/Parentage: Bigger 1949 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Definitely on the taller side of average peony height. ‘Plainsman’ is a statuesque peony that given good soil, good drainage and plenty of sunlight will perform well year after year.

Princess Margaret
Princess Margaret $25
Originator/Parentage: Murawska 1960 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Per the American Peony Society Checklist; "Named with the permission of Her Royal Highness and of Her Majesty, the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth." The flowers are enormous and probably among the largest I grow here.

Prosperity Maud
Prosperity Maud $45
Originator/Parentage: Ménard/D'Aoust 2004 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / None
This was the first peony from the Ménard seedling collection that I registered and this is the first time it is offered in my catalogue. The flowers are an unusual shade of apricot and they hold their colour well. Deep pink flares at the base of each petal have their colour amplified by the deep pink base of the otherwise golden stamens.

Red Grace
Red Grace $30
Originator/Parentage: Glasscock/Klehm, R.G.
1980 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
A tightly packed rounded centre actually resembles a red tennis ball. The colour is excellent and does not fade. Plant it near yellow Siberian iris for an eye catching effect.

Rita
Rita $25
Originator/Parentage: Dessert 1922 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Plant this with some of the late Japanese peonies such as 'Le Charme' to make a bold statement at the end of the peony season. The prominent red streaks of this peony are perfectly reflected in the petal colour of 'Le Charme'.

Rose Heart
Rose Heart $45
Originator/Parentage: Bockstoce/Landis 1974 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
This cultivar was mixed up with 'Bess Bockstoce' for many years until the American Peony Society stepped into the fray in 2006 and distinguished once and for all that 'Bess Bockstoce' and 'Rose Heart' are two different cultivars. (I have both listed this year albeit in limited quantities). The name 'Rose Heart' is very appropriate as the fading pattern of the flower petals results in a dramatic deeply coloured centre surrounded by much paler petals as the flowers age. The flower coloration is unique. It has been a cultivar that is slow to establish here but once settled in the flowers are remarkable though they can be easily damaged in very humid weather.

Sarah Bernhardt
Sarah Bernhardt $25
Originator/Parentage: Lemoine 1906 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: >90 cm / Best when staked
Bloom Period: Week 6
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
I assume this peony was named after the fiery Victorian actress extraordinaire of the same name. This peony has been around for nearly 100 years and was introduced by the Lemoine family of French nurserymen. An unbeatable cut flower with a pleasant fragrance. It needs some staking to resist heavy wind and rain but well worth the effort.

Sea Shell
Seashell $30
Originator/Parentage: Sass 1937 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: >90 cm / P. lactiflora
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: 1 or 2 per stem / Good
Some people believe this to be one of the finest single pink peonies available. Flowers are carried on tall stems making them an ideal cut flower.

In the garden the plant is tall, the flowers large and numerous. This is a beautiful, informal peony that moves gracefully with the wind and is a good companion to some of the more rigid double flowered peonies such as 'Pillow Talk' or 'Mother’s Choice'.

Show Girl
Show Girl $30
Originator/Parentage: Hollingsworth 1984 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Good
Another of those oh so pretty peonies from Don Hollingsworth. Has some similarity to Lavon and 'LaDonna' in that some flowers will produce a second smaller flower in the centre of the original flower.

Sunday Chimes
Sunday Chimes $30
Originator/Parentage: Hollingsworth 1996 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: Occasional /Faint
A robust peony in both flower and foliage habit. Large pale pink flowers float above abundant shiny green foliage. Leave the fading flowers on the plant to enjoy the decorative seed pods right into fall. Produces seeds that can be collect in early fall and planted to produce another generation of peonies.

The Fleece
The Fleece $35
Originator/Parentage: Kelsey 1936 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several /Faint
As I’ve said elsewhere in this catalogue, I have always been impressed by the peonies introduced by Ernest Kelsey. ‘The Fleece’ is no exception. If you have not tried any of Kelsey’s peonies, perhaps this might be a good starting point.

Very discreet deep pink threadlike edging to the occasional petal. Beautifully formed flowers.

The Nathans
The Nathans $25
Originator/Parentage: Kelsey 1937 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
Loose double flowers with two distinct rings of stamens. On the low side of average peony height. I love the way this peony opens several flowers per stem simultaneously. Cut a single stem and you can almost fill a vase!

Westerner
Westerner $25
Originator/Parentage: Bigger 1942 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Depends upon location
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Faint
A very pretty Japanese form peony. The guard petals are an interesting shade of orchid pink while the centre is a buttery yellow. The flowers are quite large.

Wonderful when planted with ‘Doreen’ which is just a few shades darker and flowers a few days later.

White Sands
White Sands $25
Originator/Parentage: Wild 1968 / P. lactiflora
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 5
Side buds/Fragrance: Several / Excellent
Another of the anemone form flowers that has an excellent fragrance. Young plants often look more Japanese in form but develop fuller flowers as the plants mature. Fragrance is important to me but it sometimes comes at the expense of stem strength. This is not the case with ‘White Sands’; fragrance and a well behaved plant are part of the package.

Windchimes
Windchimes $35
Originator/Parentage: Reath 1984 /hybrid
Height/Staking: 60-90 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 2
Side buds/Fragrance: None / None
Flowering at the beginning of the peony bloom season makes this an interesting peony. It will tolerate a bit more shade than most peonies. It is an informal looking plant and one that looks at home at the edge of a woodland garden or in the light shade of a high canopy tree. The stems are rigid and I’ve yet to see spring weather that would fell this peony.

Zuni Lad
Zuni Lad $30
Originator/Parentage: Krekler 1977 /hybrid
Height/Staking: <60 cm / Not required
Bloom Period: Week 4
Side buds/Fragrance: None / Faint
An excellent peony for someone with not much space or looking for a front of the border plant. It is a diminutive peony with foliage and flowers perfectly scaled for each other. The flowers are very well formed and held upright.
